Frequently Asked ??

Please review the following questions and answers for helpful hints for your communication system. If you can not find an answer to you questions please feel free to contact our tech line at 805-541-1696.

Intercoms and mobile radios

Q. Can my RRP600 intercom connect to a 24 volt system?
A. Yes. The RRP600 intercom is made to work with systems from 9-24 volts

Q. My mobile radio does not transmit as far as it use to.
A. Make sure the radio is on high power. Also check your antenna to make sure it is seated all the way down on the NMO mount.

Q. The audio from the mobile radio only comes out the front speaker on the radio not through the intercom system.
A. Plug in the 3.5mm gold plug on the intercom/radio cable into the external speaker port on the mobile radio.

Q. My intercom system has ignition noise when engine is running.
A. You may have a ground loop. Make sure your power for the intercom and radio are connected directly to the battery and not to a switch that maybe tied to the ignition.

Q. When I transmit through my intercom system the other car hears too much background noise?
A. Adjust the radio gain adjustment on the back of the RRP600 intercom under the plastic cover. Turn counter clockwise one click at a time. Retest your transmit level until the desired level is reached. Be sure to replace plastic cover.

Q. When I listen to my intercom system the mobile radio comes through too loud?
A. Turn the volume down on the mobile radio. The volume control for 2-way radio listening is only controled by the radio.

Q. How do I adjust my VOX/Squelch control?
A. Simple rotate the VOX control clockwise until the mics are always live. Be sure to have the microphones as close to your mouth as possible. Then rotate the VOX control counter colckwise until the background noise goes away and the mics are off. Then speak into the mics. They should instantly turn on. If the background noise still turns the mics on, rotate the VOX control one click at a time until the mics turn off. Speak into the mics with a louder voice to turn on.

Q. Do I need an external amplifier for my Ipod in the Rugged RRP600 intercom systems?
A. No! The Rugged RRP600 intercom and Rugged headsets are designed for audio performance. Simply plug your Ipod into the front of the intercom and enjoy the music. Remember the volume for the Ipod is controled on the Ipod.

Q. Will the RRP600 intercom work with my Icom V8000 mobile radio?
A. Yes! The RRP600 is designed for almost every application. See the Radio Jumper Cables for all of the available applications.

Q. My push to talk will not plug directly into my intercom.
A. The push to talk will need a CS-PTT-ADPT cable to adapt to the intercom.

Q. Can I use the push to talk on my headset for radio transmitting?
A. Yes! If you use the CS-9-5P or CS-16-5P Rugged headset direct cables the headset PTT is now ready to use.

Q. These FAQ's didn't answer my specific problem, can i call for help?
A. Of course, we are always happy to assist in your communication needs. We update this page with common questions we receive every week. Please check back again soon or give one of our techs a call (805)-541 7223.

Product Document Downloads

RRP600 Intercom Installation Instructions

Rugged DSP Installation Instructions

RRP600 Remote Head Instructions

Vertex VX2200 Operating Manual

Intercom to radio cable:

5 pin chrome plug: The chrome plug on the cable plugs into the radio port on the intercom.

2 pin white molex: The white 2 pin molex connector plugs into the power plug off of the intercom. When you turn on the radio your intercom will power up.

15 pin serial connector: The gray 15 pin serial connector plugs into the back of the Vertex radio.

3.5mm gold tip plug: The 3.5mm gold pin plug goes back to the radio just above the serial port connector.

Antenna coax cable:

Find the best location for mounting antenna. The center of your vehicle or it's hightest point is the best location for maximum range. Mount the NMO mount (gold connector) in a 3/8 hole on a roll bar tab or aluminum roof.

Route the coax cable away from hot areas or spots where damage may occure. If you have any extra cable DO NOT COIL. Route excess cable further around the vehicle. Coiling the coax cable will cause bad performance and reduced range.

Plug in the PL259 (silver connector) into the mobile radio. DO NOT use any thread lock or sealer. Make sure this plug is seated all of the way down and tight.

Do not coil excess cable like this:

I purchased the Rugged Race products Intercom with all the cabling I needed from Greg at the SSSS, I have it temporarily installed in my Teryx (read mounted and all wires running with zipties and sticky backs and wired into the 12v plug for now.) and will be hard mounting in the next couple of weeks. Very quality product and great customer service from Rugged.
I had also ordered a Zamp SA-2005 wired for off-road com, forced air helmet for my wife for the powder puff race from them and had issues with it upon delivery (Zamp issue not rugged), and Greg stepped up and repaired it and overnighted it to me on the day before we were leaving for the race.
Great company and customer service from these guys.
