A podium finish to start off the 2016 season!

Well it's finally happened our first podium in Best in the Desert. It feels great and I'm so thankful that all of you have believed in and supported me. Now on to the race...

Leading up to Parker, the team didn't need to do much to our Can-Am Maverick turbo from the Henderson 250. The car felt like a rocket and with the new springs on our fox shox the Racer tech long travel was eating up everything we could throw at it. With a minor prep we headed to Parker Friday morning and arrived at tech around noon. Tech took a little bit longer than normal with all the new cars this year. After tech we hung around the Blue Water casino talking to other teams and waiting for the drivers meeting. With the drivers meeting complete, it was time to rest and get ready for the race the following morning. It was hard to sleep and I felt like a little kid on Christmas looking forward to the race knowing we had what it takes to do well. At 7:30 the alarm goes off and after a shower, and a real quick team meeting we were off to the main pit to set up.

At 11:30 the green flag drop and we are off. With the rain Parker had received earlier in the week there was almost no dust. The 910 and I battled back and forth for the first 10 miles which was really fun and before I knew it we could see the blue light from the cars that started in front of us. The first lap was really fast and we come into the main pit in 5th. The 951,913,919,& 910 where in front of us and as we proceeded down pit row we passed the 951 & 913 exiting the pit in 3rd place. Back onto the course, we pushed our Can-Am hard. Two miles from the main pit we came across the 919 stopped and changing a belt leaving us in 2nd. Eight miles from there, we see another car stopped on the right and it's the 910 changing a bad wheel.

It was surreal to now be the leader of my first BITD race driving through the spectator areas and have everyone up and cheering. One thing I learned being out front is, it's very hard. Now I'm setting the race pace and I couldn't stop thinking if I was going fast enough or not. Well right before the mid way pit I found out the answer when my teammate in 904 had caught up. Knowing he started behind us and had us bet on corrected time, we move to the right and allowed a clean pass so not to take either one of us out. We kept up to the 904 for the next 20 miles and settled back down with 25 miles to go. We were feeling good and then suddenly a loud BANG. I asked Josh what that was and before he could answer I figured it out...NO brakes. Great, the roughest curviest part of the course is ahead of us and we have no brakes so now my driving has to change to compensate. I felt we are still making good time but I guess not as we get caught again by another teammate S3. We moved to the right giving them a clean pass and now the panic sets in. In the last 30 miles I've gone from leading to 3rd and I know there are still a lot of fast guys behind us. I step it up for the last 10 miles to the finish line to make sure I keep our podium spot. Two miles from the finish line I see a car stopped on the right...it's 904. Giving us the thumbs up, we fly right by and never looked back leaving everything we had out there as we race across the finish line. Up on top of the stage we learn of our 2nd place finish making this our very first podium in BITD.

What a way to start the 2016 season and thanks again for all the support and looking forward to the UTV World Championship.

Strong start for the 2015 season!

In his debut race for BITD, Logan Gastel made a strong finish at 13th out of 55 UTV racers at the Parker 250.  This year is going to be a very exciting year for Team Rugged and we can't wait to follow Logan at the upcoming UTV World Championship next month.

Pure 175 Heartbreak

"Good Morning Team well with the pure 275 now in the books it brings our 2014 season to an end. Needing to finish 1st in the last race and the current points leader to finish 5 cars behind us to win another championship we know we had our work cut out for us. After starting last in class and being in the car for 6.5hrs straight we finished 3rd guaranteeing our 3rd place finish in points for the season in the pro class and overall. Here's the break down in numbers 3rd out of 26 in class and 3rd out of 56 overall for the yr., although I would've liked to be on top again this season I feel my team and I did well with the new maverick that was flawless for the 5 races and looking forward to what 2015 brings us. Thank you and everyone at Rugged Radios for giving me the opportunity to represent the Rugged family and hope to build on our relationship for next year."

Pure 175 Heartbreak

Logan Gastel Races the PURE 175

"It is with great displeasure that I'm writing you all this morning to inform you that the Can Am Maverick of Gastel Racing/ Murray Motorsports was handed our first DNF of our desert racing carrier in the pure series this past Saturday, after starting out strong and taking the lead early in the first lap, we began to put distance between us and the rest of the field but unfortunately somewhere around 1/2 way through the race just 4 miles short of the pit we took a small stick right through the radiator, I tried to nurse the car back to the pit by only going 30mph but it was getting too hot so I made the decision to stop and shut her down to save the motor. My chase team came out to tow me back the 4.2 miles to the pit which was 2.4 miles further then allowed for me to fix the radiator and re-enter the race. I feel terrible letting all of you down and has been eating me alive all weekend, I want to thank you all for putting your trust and faith in my team and I to go out there and do battle and represent your companies and will do our best to rebound from this and get us back on podium!"

Logan Gastel

Gastel Racing is small family operated race team owned by Logan Gastel. Logan is a third generation business owner of his families construction company started in 1969 by his grandfather and a loving husband to his wife and son (2nd child on the way). Gastel racing started in 2011 after years of watching off-road events and the passion for UTV racing.
