Antenna Placement Guide

Antenna Placement Guide

The Ultimate Guide to Antenna Placement

Maximize Your Antenna's Range, Reliability, and Rugged Style

You have the rig and the crew, but without proper antenna placement, you are just talking to yourself in the dust. Your antenna is the most critical factor for range and clarity. Even the best radio will fail if the antenna is blocked by light bars or roof racks. From family dune trips to Baja racing, here is how to mount your antenna for peak performance.

Location is Everything!

The golden rule of antennas is simple: the higher, the better. You want your signal to be high and clear, so keeping it above obstructions is key. Radio waves are mostly line-of-sight, which means things like your vehicle’s cage, roof, or even your buddie's rig can block your signal.

What is a "Ground Plane"?

For the absolute best range, you want your antenna mounted in the center of a metal roof. This creates what we call a "ground plane," which basically uses the metal surface of your vehicle to help reflect and project your signal further. If you don't have a metal roof, don't sweat it. We have specific "No Ground Plane" (NGP) antennas designed to work perfectly on plastic roofs, roll cages, or tab mounts.

What Kind of Antenna Should I Use?

Not all antennas are created equal. Depending on where you ride and how much clearance you have, you might need a different tool for the job. The most important thing to consider above all else is to ensure that your antenna matches the frequency band of your radio; VHF radios need a VHF antenna, and UHF radios need a UHF antenna. Learn more about the differences in frequency bands here.

Quick Pro Tips for the Trail

  • Keep it Vertical: Your antenna should be standing straight up to keep your signal high and clear. If it’s tilted back for style, you’re sending your signal into the dirt and the sky instead of to your friends.

  • Watch Your Cables: Never kink or crush your antenna cable. Use gentle loops and zip-tie it securely to your cage, away from high-heat areas or ignition wires that cause interference.

  • No Antenna, No Transmit: Never press the PTT button without an antenna connected. Doing so can cause permanent damage to your radio’s internals.

The GMRS Whip Antenna

This is the go-to for most UTV and off-roaders. It’s a 1/2 wave antenna that packs a punch without being a massive whip that smacks every branch on the trail.

  • Optimized for GMRS and UHF frequencies for excellent clarity.

  • Compact 12.5-inch size strikes a great balance between range and clearance.

  • Durable, flexible whip that can handle some abuse from trees and brush.

  • This is a No Ground Plane (NGP) antenna, making it ideal for mounting on any cage or plastic roof without needing a metal surface.

  • Slightly less range than a full-sized 5/8 wave race antenna.
  • Still tall enough to occasionally snag in very low-clearance garages or toy haulers.

The Stealth Antenna

Living up to its name, the Stealth antenna is the ultimate low-profile solution. Standing at just about 3.25 inches tall, it’s designed for those who need to fit under low obstacles or just want a clean, minimalist look.

  • Ultra-low profile means no more worrying about low-hanging branches or garage doors.

  • Extremely durable since there is very little to actually snag or break.

  • Perfect for "caravanning" or staying in contact with a group that’s within a few miles.

  • Great for toy haulers where clearance is tight.

  • Reduction in maximum transmit range compared to a traditional whip antenna or a base camp antenna.

  • Best used for short-range communication rather than long-distance desert crossing.

The Base Camp / Fiberglass Antenna

When you need to reach out and call someone over a very large area, this is the beast you want. Usually mounted on chase trucks, pit setups, or at your home base, these antennas are built for maximum distance.

Pros:

  • Massive gain (up to 6.5 dB) provides the longest range possible for GMRS and Business Band.

  • Heavy-duty fiberglass construction is weatherproof and built to last.

  • High power handling (up to 200 watts) for the most demanding setups.

  • Ideal for pit crews needing to stay in touch with race cars over long distances.

  • Not meant for moving vehicles in tight terrain due to its height and rigid construction.

  • Requires a stable mounting point like a flagpole, building, or specialized chase truck rack.
