The RA980 delivers premium audio clarity, active noise reduction, and Bluetooth connectivity — all in an ultra-lightweight carbon fiber design. Engineered for pilots who demand top-tier performance and comfort, the RA980 combines professional-grade features with modern styling and unmatched value.
Powered by two AA batteries, the control module has a power indication light so you can always know how much battery life you have left. In the event of the batteries going completely dead, the headset is still able to provide passive noise reduction with a rating of 20dB.
The control module also houses everything you need to control your Bluetooth auxiliary functions including Bluetooth pairing, answering phone calls and adjusting music volume. It even allows you to set your mode to radio priority where auxiliary functions are dimmed when a radio transmission comes through, no priority where all channels are open and heard equally or radio only where auxiliary functions are turned off completely. An auto shut-off will turn the Bluetooth off after 5 minutes of no use.

Service has been great! Had some intermittent issues and rugged went above and sent a replacement instead of fixing the unit. I would like to see a better fitting and stiffer case for the unit as we are always taking the headsets in and out of the planes, hotels etc

I have been using this headset for almost two years and have been very happy. Comfort has been good, no flights longer than 3 hours. I will be adding the gel ear pads, on the recommendation of a friend. So far I haven't had any issues, audio is clear, mic pickup is good and the ANR & Bluetooth have been nice to have on solo flights. Aud

Folks, dont waste your hard earned money on this headset. Rugged air is charging you for the carbon fibre and thats all. You are better off with their 200 dollar version.
The sound on this set is like a tin can vibrating. $0 went into the tech and all of it went into the carbon fibre. Ive tested other headsets around this price and none are anywhere as bad as this.
Sure they are light, but they are almost so light that the foam padding cant seal properly.
The fit and finish I would rate 8/10. They look good, the carbon fibre weave is solid. This is the only thing they have going for them.
Purchased and had to return them same day. Shame. What could have been a great product is plagued with poor technology, strange Bluetooth connectivity choice, and a lack of consideration for clear audio.

I have been using a Bose A30 and I couldn’t imagine how a headset could get any better until I bought the RA980 Now, I am using the RA980. The RA980 noise cancelation is out of this world. Noisey piston engine flights turn into peaceful relaxation.There are settings if you want to pipe in just a little engine noise.Other feature I would like to point out is the pleasant and comfortable fit that is offered with this carbon fiber lightweight headset. The ear muffs sit completely around the ear with no pressure being applied. This is perfect for those long flights as there will rarely be pain involved for long term use.The mic does a 360 so it can be placed on the right or left . These are some of the features which I have noticed . Some others include the Bluetooth technology, USB Type C plug as backup to the battery in the headset. Overall I would definitely recommend this headset model to all general aviation pilots. Well worth the money! The RA980 is an astounding stellar set worth every penny to vastly improve the flying experience. Just buy them great deal!

Rugged Air RA980 Bluetooth Cell Phone ANR General Aviation Pilot Headset
The headset is extremely comfortable and lightweight. I don’t get sweaty wearing them for longer flights. The ANR is amazing, almost too good since I have to really listen for the stall horn. Very clear sound for both passengers and radio. Have not tried out Bluetooth music or phone yet, maybe on a cross country.

I purchased 2 headsets enogh time ahead to have them delivered at TYS and they did have not arrived yet, I have a problem now at home how to get them to Mexico !

Rugged Air RA980 Bluetooth Cell Phone ANR General Aviation Pilot Headset
I have been trusting Rugged with my race radios for off-road racing. From the Baja1000 to short course UTVs. When someone mentioned they also offered a General Aviation headset for Private Pilots, I definitely wanted to do some research.
Obviously there is a little more at stake if you lose communication while you are flying versus a race track. However, after speaking to their team and understanding the research and effort that went into engineering their RA980, I felt very confident going up in the air with the headset.
With many flights under my belt, including cross country, the RA980 and its Bluetooth capability for some music in the background is a great way to fly. Excited that Rugged has my back Land and Air. May have to see if they have a headset for offshore powerboat racing next...
